Lithuania’s railways have launched an updated route to Tallinn, requiring just one interchange and a single ticket. Previously, the route required two interchanges and three separate tickets.
In a press release Monday, the Lithuanian state-owned railways, LTG, said the updated route will start on February 10, with one-way tickets costing 39 euros.
The railway operators of the three Baltic countries aim to launch in the near future a Vilnius–Riga–Tallinn connection without requiring an interchange at Valga in Estonia, LTG said.
The train from Vilnius will leave at 07:05 and arrive in Tallinn at 17:34, with the journey taking 10 hours and 29 minutes. On the return leg, the train will leave Tallinn at 10:25 and arrive in Vilnius at 21:03, with the journey taking slightly longer – 10 hours and 38 minutes.
Meanwhile, the 600-kilometre journey by car takes around 8 hours, according to Google Maps data. The bus journey takes around 9 hours, based on routes offered by several different operators.
The train journey time will be slashed by more than half once the Rail Baltica high-speed rail project is completed. It was due to be finished by 2026, but the project is suffering from delays and cost-overruns.
