Lithuania’s parliament speaker Juozas Olekas believes that joining a US-led coalition aimed at restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could benefit the country’s economy and citizens.
“We should participate in international operations and stand with our partners if we want a positive impact on Lithuania’s economy and people,” Olekas told the radio Žinių Radijas on Wednesday.
President Gitanas Nausėda said last week that Lithuania received and was considering a US proposal to join what he described as a “neutral” mission to ensure security in the strategic waterway. He said the proposal would be submitted to the State Defence Council, and that parliamentary approval would also be required.
Several countries have already expressed readiness to take part in the mission, according to reports.
Lithuanian officials have not yet made a final decision on participation in the coalition.
