Lithuania bans Russian, Belarusian, Chinese citizens from joining defence forces

BNS 2024.12.19 11:56

Persons with Russian, Belarusian, or Chinese citizenship will not be allowed to join the Lithuanian Armed Forces and Riflemen’s Union, the country’s lawmakers decided on Thursday.

According to the adopted amendments, citizens of Russia, Belarus, and China will not be accepted for professional military service, voluntary military service, or other voluntary non-permanent military service, as well as compulsory military service.

If a person already serving in the armed forces acquires the nationality of these countries, they will be dismissed.

The same requirement applies to members of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union.

Earlier this year, the government banned members of professional military service from travelling to countries that pose a threat to Lithuania’s national security, including Russia, Belarus, and China, for off-duty purposes.

In November, BNS was informed that 11 dual Lithuanian-Russian or Lithuania-Belarusian citizens were serving in the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
