Facts and figures: Ten years of Lithuania’s LNG terminal Independence

LRT.lt 2024.10.30 08:00

Ten years ago, on October 27, 2014, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Independence arrived at Klaipėda Port, bringing energy independence to Lithuania.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Independence, the operator KN Energies shares interesting facts about the LNG terminal.

1. The LNG terminal, consisting of the Independence storage vessel, berth and pipeline spur, is the first terminal based on this technology in the Baltic region and Northern Europe, and the second in Europe overall.

2. Since the start of the terminal’s operation, 79 different LNG carriers have visited the Klaipėda Port.

3. Most of the gas deliveries have come from Norway and the US. Gas has also arrived from African countries, such as Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, and Algeria.

4. The largest LNG cargo in a decade was delivered by the gas carrier Flex Aurora. The cargo from the US consisted of 165,400 cubic metres of LNG. The ship visited the Klaipėda Port in February this year.

5. Klaipėda LNG terminal has been operating for 3,650 days without safety incidents.

6. From January 1, 2015, to the present day, the LNG terminal has dispensed around 15.6 billion cubic metres of natural gas.

7. Since the beginning of its operation, the Klaipėda LNG terminal has performed 456 LNG reloading operations from or to gas carriers.

8. The terminal is used by five countries – Lithuania, as well as Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Norway.

9. More than half of the LNG terminal’s revenues are collected from foreign customers. Each company using the LNG terminal pays a dispatching service fee. This includes not only Lithuanian companies but also companies from neighbouring countries.

10. If needed, the storage vessel Independence can fully meet the Lithuanian gas market demand. The terminal has been built and designed in such a way that even on the coldest winter day it can fully supply Lithuanian consumers with gas. The LNG terminal is estimated to have a maximum nominal capacity of 33 terawatt hours (TWh) per year, compared to Amber Grid’s estimate of 14.9 terawatt hours (TWh) of gas consumed in Lithuania in 2023.

11. According to KN Energies’ calculations, since the start of LNG terminal operation, Lithuania saves on average about 166 million euros annually due to the lower gas prices.

12. The LNG terminal’s storage vessel Independence is currently registered in Singapore’s ship registry and flies the flag of that country. The Lithuanian flag will be hoisted when the country takes over the vessel in December this year.
