Person suspected of attack on Russian Embassy detained in Vilnius

Vilnius police have detained a person suspected of having thrown bottles with incendiary liquids at the Russian Embassy on Sunday and Monday nights. 

The person, born in 1974 and known to the police, has been detained in connection with the two attacks over the weekend, the Vilnius District Chief Police Commissariat said on Tuesday. The person is a Lithuanian citizen.

The person has been taken into custody at the Vilnius Chief Police Commissariat.

The police reported earlier that bottles with a flammable liquid were thrown at the Russian Embassy in Vilnius early Sunday and Monday mornings.

During the second incident, the bottle caught fire and damaged the wall of the embassy building. The damage is still being assessed.

A pre-trial investigation is being carried out into damage caused to property in a generally dangerous manner.

Offences of this nature are punishable by a fine, restriction of liberty, arrest, or a prison term of up to five years.
