A German-Dutch corps will command NATO forces in Estonia and Latvia in a move to bolster Baltic defences, the Reuters news agency reported on Thursday.
"The deployment of an additional tactical headquarters in the region strengthens coherence within NATO and contributes to Russia's deterrence," Reuters quoted the German and Dutch ministries saying in a joint statement.
The 1 German-Netherlands Corps (1GNC), based in Germany, will become the headquarters for NATO in the region by mid-2026, with the alliance set to formalise the new structure this summer.
Previously, a military official told Reuters that the change will allow NATO to bring in “mass at speed”.
