Lithuania’s Social Democratic Party will decide in early June whether to continue in its governing coalition, party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius said on Wednesday.
He said the party council is expected to meet during the first weekend of June, ahead of the party convention scheduled for June 12-14. He expressed a desire for the party to reach a decision before the gathering.
The discussion on the coalition’s future was triggered after members of the Nemunas Dawn voted against establishing a military training area in Kapčiamiestis, and following controversial statements by its leader, including claims of an alleged coup plot planned in the autumn.
Sinkevičius dismissed the allegations as unfounded and described them as nonsense.
After the 2024 parliamentary elections, the Social Democrats formed a coalition with Nemunas Dawn and the Democrats 'for Lithuania'. Following the resignation of former Social Democrat leader and PM Gintautas Paluckas, the Democrats were replaced by the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens and Christian Families Union faction, while Nemunas Dawn remained in the coalition.
The governing coalition currently holds 81 seats in the Seimas.
