Incumbent Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda remains the most popular presidential candidate in Lithuania, according to a new Vilmorus poll for the Lietuvos Rytas daily, published on Friday.

According to the poll, 40.2 percent of voters support Nausėda. Far behind him is a lawyer Ignas Vėgėlė (10.6 percent), and Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė (8.9 percent).

MP Remigijus Žemaitaitis would receive 5.1 percent of the votes, while 2.2 percent would vote for Labour Party leader Andrius Mazuronis. A doctor Eduardas Vaitkus and the Freedom Party’s candidate Dainius Žalimas would receive 2 percent of the votes each, according to the poll.

Meanwhile, Giedrimas Jeglinskas, a former NATO deputy secretary general, nominated by the Democrats “For Lithuania” is supported by 1.3 percent of the voters.

Of those surveyed, 6.5 percent would have not voted at all in March, and 15.2 percent were undecided.

On Thursday, Lithuania’s Central Electoral Commission (VRK) registered Nausėda, Šimonytė, and Žalimas as presidential candidates.

The VRK has also turned to the Lithuanian Centre for Legal Expertise over the voter signatures collected by Mazuronis and Žemaitaitis after suspicions were raised that some of them may be forged.

The Vilmorus survey was conducted on March 15–23.

The first round of the presidential election in Lithuania will take place on May 12.
