In a meeting with Facebook representatives on Wednesday, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis called on the social media platform to stop blocking pro-Ukraine accounts and supporters.
“Facebook representatives have promised to quickly find solutions so that the accounts of Lithuanian public figures and social activists are not blocked due to little linguistic nuances," Landsbergis said in a statement following his meeting with Nick Clegg, the president for global relations at META.
Lithuania is concerned that, in the wake of Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine, Facebook is blocking some comments by Ukraine supporters.
Pro-Ukraine accounts are most often blocked for the use of the terms "moscals", "katsaps" and "orcs", according to a study carried out by Debunk.org, a disinformation analysis centre.
Accounts are also blocked for the use of phrases "Putin's zombies", "vatnik" or "Russian Nazis".
Representatives of the Lithuanian government are inviting META representatives to discuss these problems in Vilnius later this month.
