Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis met with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the opposition challenger in Belarus' disputed presidential election, in his office in Vilnius on Thursday.

"We talked about the trials and tribulations she had gone through during the election campaign and the tremendous responsibility she had taken on," Skvernelis posted on Facebook.

"[We] also [talked] about her day-to-day issues and needs in Lithuania, and her personal safety and the safety of her family," the prime minister wrote.

"I assured Svetlana that the Lithuanian government, together with its partners in Latvia, Poland and Estonia, is doing and will do all it can to ensure that free and fair elections are held in Belarus and that her children can hug their father, released from custody, as soon as possible," he added.

The meeting took place at the government's building, Tomas Beržinskas, the prime minister's spokesman, told BNS.

Tikhanovskaya fled to Lithuania shortly after incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko declared victory in the Belarusian presidential election with 80 percent of the vote.

Belarus' opposition and Western countries do not recognise Lukashenko's re-election.

The opposition candidate spent some time in isolation upon her arrival in Lithuania. President Gitanas Nausėda said on Wednesday that she had tested negative for Covid-19 and was feeling well.
