Lithuania is conducting a nationwide test of its public warning and alert system on Thursday noon.
Sirens across the country will sound at 11:52 and continue for three minutes, until 11:55, according to the Fire and Rescue Department.
At the same time, people will receive alert messages on their mobile phones, as well as notifications via the LT72 app.
Officials stressed that the test is planned and that the sirens do not signal any real danger.
The department said that upon hearing the sirens or receiving an alert message, people should turn on LRT RADIO or LRT TV to follow official information, the same procedure that would apply in a real emergency.
Alert messages are sent to all mobile users, but they are received only on devices with the alert function enabled. Instructions on how to activate the service are available on the LT72 website and in the mobile app.
The public warning system is designed to quickly inform people about threats to life, health or property, and its operation is regularly tested. Such checks are typically carried out twice a year, though they may be conducted more frequently if needed.
During the most recent test in December 2025, about 1,160 sirens were activated nationwide, with 2.6% failing to operate, compared with 5.4% in the previous test. Authorities say the results show that regular testing helps identify and reduce system shortcomings.
Currently, sirens reach about 69% of the population. With new installations and upgrades, coverage is expected to reach about 75% of residents by 2029.
