Lithuania's ex-EU commissioner to become WHO's special envoy for Europe

BNS 2020.02.28 12:43

Lithuania's former European Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis is about to take office as the World Health Organization's special envoy for the European region.

"I'm already involved in this work [and] I've made my first trips to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan," Andriukaitis told BNS.

He expects to formally take office on March 1. Andriukaitis will be based in Conpenhagen and his portfolio will cover 53 European countries.

However, the Lithuanian Social Democratic politician, whose term as the European commissioner for health and food safety ended last December, has yet to obtain a conflict-of-interest clearance from the European Commission.

Andriukaitis is a co-signatory to the 1990 act that reestablished Lithuania's independence. He also ran in the 2019 presidential election.
