A Lithuanian jury picked the documentary feature ‘Bridges of Time’, a Lithuanian-Latvian coproduction, to vie for the best foreign-language Oscar nomination this year.
Directed by Lithuanian Andrius Stonys and Latvian Kristīne Briede, ‘Bridges of Time’ is the second documentary Lithuania submits to the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Last year, it selected ‘Wonderful Losers: A Different World’, directed by Arūnas Matelis.
Each country is invited to submit what they consider their best film. The Academy then picks five nominees for the foreign-language Oscar.
The seven-member Lithuanian jury has been appointed by the Lithuanian Film Centre and the Lithuanian Union of Cinematographers. It selected ‘Bridges of Time’ from among five contenders, according to a press release.
The film premiered last year in the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Described as a film essay, ‘Bridges of Time’ tells a story about Baltic documentary filmmakers and, according to Stonys, is “a love letter” to his teachers.
