The newest Euro zone newcomer Lithuania has a special chamber to memorialize the former national currency Litas. The chamber is decorated only with Lithuanian cents.

The idea of the chamber was initiated by the Šiauliai University. Activists from that school started gathering Lithuanian cents last summer, and little by little created a special chamber in the university library.

They are no longer in use since Lithuania adopted Euro on 1st January 2015; the transitional period of dual currency lasted only several weeks.

Visitors of the chamber can find a special map of Lithuania, a special throne and a book with the names of those who contributed cents.

Creators of the chamber claim that their idea is unique and they will attempt it to be listed in the Guinness World Records.

An initiative was also awarded by the Lithuanian President as an original way to mark the Independence Day, because the chamber was opened on 16th February, the day of 1918 Act of Independence.

GRAŽINA LAMANAUSKIENĖ, Chairwoman of Šiauliai University library:
We’ve received loads of letters and packages with Lithuanian cents from all over the country: Kaunas, Alytus, Radviliškis. Sorry for not mentioning many other cities. Even children without asking their mothers’ were sending us coins.

STASĖ, visitor:
This is a very good idea. I thought everything will be made from 1 cent coins, but here are coins of all denominations.
