Russia is using a facility in Kaliningrad to direct the Ukrainian drones toward the Baltic states and Finland, security experts told The Daily Telegraph.
In the article published last week, the Daily Telegraph said a facility in Kaliningrad was at the centre of Moscow’s efforts. Russia jams the drones’ signal before spoofing it with false navigation data.
Looking at live data from the Estonian border region, it was possible to see spoofing in real time, according to Ramsey Faragher, the chief executive of the Royal Institute of Navigation.
The Kaliningrad facility has been jamming GPS signals over Baltic airspace for years. Experts say Russia’s actions could constitute an act of aggression against NATO.
“Russia is actively violating NATO and European airspace,” said Spencer Faragasso, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Science and International Security. “These drone incursions can be viewed as part of Russia’s shadow war that it’s been waging against Europe for years now.”
Last Wednesday, an air alert was declared for the first time in Vilnius and other regions bordering Belarus over a drone threat.
An air alert was also declared in northeastern Utena county on Wednesday after two suspected drones entered the country’s airspace.
Residents were instructed to shelter in basements and designated safe locations,
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is due to visit Lithuania on Tuesday.
She is expected to meet the leaders of the Baltic states to discuss a joint response. European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius is also expected to travel to Lithuania.
