America’s decision to deploy 5,000 troops to Poland was the most effective way to ensure deterrence, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys said on Friday
“This is the cheapest way to ensure peace on the continent, and it also provides military benefits to the United States. We are interested in having them on the front line because it is the most effective deterrent,” Lithuania’s top diplomat said in Helsingborg, Sweden.
Budrys also said Lithuania provides US troops with host-nation conditions – modern housing and infrastructure for exercises – and expressed hope that the deployment would be long-term.
US President Donald Trump announced the deployment of 5,000 American troops to Poland on Thursday. This follows previous plans to reduce US forces in Europe while pressuring allies to increase their defence contributions.
According to Budrys, Europe itself must take more responsibility and increase its capabilities. He also drew attention once again to Russia's accusations against the Baltic states, alleging they allow Ukraine to attack targets in Russia.
“This is an absolute lie. Lithuania has nothing to do with this and has never allowed its territory or airspace to be used for such attacks,” Budrys said.
According to the minister, the alliance's most important tasks are to demonstrate unity, fulfil promises, and invest in defence, as without these there will be no proper deterrence or peace.
“We must prove to ourselves and show our adversaries that we are more united than ever, and that the transatlantic bond is working effectively,” he said.
