Lithuania has launched a trilateral explosive ordnance disposal exercise in Klaipėda, bringing together military specialists from Lithuania, Portugal and the United States.

The drills, which opened on Monday, are taking place at the Kairiai training ground, within Klaipėda port waters, and at various locations across the city, according to the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Personnel from the General Kazimieras Nestoras Sapiega Fusilier Battalion of the Naval Force are taking part alongside bomb disposal diver teams from all three nations.

Training activities include diving operations, underwater ammunition search and disposal, land-based munitions clearance, improvised explosive device neutralisation, and live-fire exercises. Coastal reconnaissance and demining drills are also on the programme.

The exercise aims to sharpen the skills of bomb disposal divers in tackling both conventional and improvised explosives in land and maritime settings, whilst bolstering interoperability between allied forces through the sharing of expertise and best practice.

Residents in the area should be aware that small pyrotechnic charges will be detonated at exercise sites between April 20 and 24, which may produce audible explosions. Live-fire activity will be confined to the Kairiai training ground.

The exercise is due to conclude on April 24.
