Lithuania drops probe into damaged Baltic Sea cables

BNS 2026.04.03 10:05

Lithuanian prosecutors have discontinued a pretrial investigation into the damage of undersea fibre-optic cables linking Lithuania and Sweden in the Baltic Sea in November 2024, authorities said Friday.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said the probe was dropped after determining that no damage had been caused to Lithuania, as the cables were damaged on the seabed within Sweden’s exclusive economic zone.

“This conclusion was reached after identifying the exact locations of the incident with precise geographic coordinates,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement. “This circumstance is essential in assessing jurisdiction and the limits of liability.”

Authorities noted that investigations into the damaged Baltic Sea cables are continuing in Sweden and Finland.
