Germany’s armaments company Rheinmetall and its Lithuanian partners on Tuesday are holding a groundbreaking ceremony for a new ammunition factory worth several hundred million euros near the northern town of Baisogala.
The facility will be built on a 340-hectare site in Kemėrai, a village about six kilometres from Baisogala in Radviliškis District. It is expected to produce tens of thousands of 155 mm artillery shells each year.
The project, valued at between 260 million and 300 million euros, is being developed jointly by Rheinmetall and two Lithuanian state-owned companies: Epso-G Invest, a subsidiary of the energy group Epso-G, and Giraitės Ginkluotės Gamykla (Giraitė Armament Factory, or GGG).

Lithuanian construction firm PST Group has been awarded a 141-million-euro contract to build the plant, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
Rheinmetall Expal Munitions CEO Jose Manuel Fernandez Bosch said earlier this year that production is expected to begin in early 2027.
