Two groups of irregular migrants try to enter Lithuania by boat

Two groups of irregular migrants tried to cross the Nemunas River from Belarus into Lithuania by boats on Sunday, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said on Monday.

The first group appeared on the Belarusian riverbank opposite the Druskininkai municipality at around 05:30, bringing two rubber boats, the border guards said.

Eighteen men then boarded the boats and started paddling toward Lithuania before being prevented from disembarking by the border guards, according to VSAT.

A second group of 16 men tried to use a boat to reach Lithuania later at around 19:00, the border guards said.

Thousands of people, mostly from countries in Asia and the Middle East, crossed into Lithuania in 2021 after the Minsk regime opened an irregular migration corridor in response to sanctions.

Since then, Lithuania has adopted the policy of so-called pushbacks, while the number of those attempting to cross irregularly has decreased over the years.
