Poland’s President Nawrocki to make stop in Vilnius as his second foreign visit

Next week, he will travel to the United States, and upon his return, he will visit Vilnius. This will be the new Polish leader’s second visit abroad.

“Soon, on September 8, we will be able to welcome him in Vilnius, as President Nawrocki will visit Vilnius on his second foreign visit after the United States,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said in a video comment on Thursday.

Nawrocki was sworn in as Poland’s president in early August, succeeding Andrzej Duda.

Duda maintained warm personal relations with Nausėda. During his visit to Vilnius in June, he said he hoped that bilateral relations between the two countries would remain good and assured that he would propose strengthening them to his successor.

In his first address, Nawrocki emphasised that Poles are “very attached to Christian values, and this should not change”.

Outlining his plans, he stressed the control of migration and the preservation of the national currency, the zloty. He also stated that he believes a new constitution will be adopted in 2030.

The politician, who has just begun his five-year term, will oversee defence and foreign policy and will have veto power over legislation.

During the presidential election campaign, he repeatedly emphasised the importance of relations with the United States and made no secret of his admiration for the policies pursued by Donald Trump, with whom he is scheduled to meet in early September.

During his campaign, Nawrocki opposed the idea of NATO membership for Ukraine and criticised Kyiv for not having “shown gratitude for what the Poles have done”.

Under his slogan “Poland First, Poles First”, he was critical of some of the benefits received by over a million Ukrainians who have fled to the country.

On Monday, he blocked legislation that would extend the rights Ukrainian refugees have in Poland, taking particular exception to child benefits which he said should be paid only to parents with a job.
