Warsaw intends to strengthen border controls between Lithuania and Poland, Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys has confirmed.

“Yesterday, I received a message from Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski that the Polish government intends to adopt a decision today to apply enhanced checks at the Lithuanian-Polish border, as well as at the Polish-German border,” the Lithuanian foreign minister said at a news conference in Vilnius on Tuesday.

According to him, Poland is introducing border checks in response to intensifying irregular migration.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Monday that Warsaw might introduce checks on its border with Lithuania.

Lithuanian border guards recorded no attempts to cross into the country from Belarus on Monday whereas Poland denied entry to 163 irregular migrants on Sunday, according to the latest available information.
