Lithuania is considering posthumously awarding state honours to the US soldiers who died during a training exercise at the Pabradė military training area, President Gitanas Nausėda said on Friday.
“We are considering posthumous state awards for these four soldiers, but no decision has been made yet,” he told reporters.
The four US soldiers went missing at the training area in eastern Lithuania on March 25 while operating an M88 Hercules armoured recovery vehicle.
The search and rescue operation lasted a week and involved Lithuanian, US, Polish, and Estonian military personnel, as well as police and civilians.
The armoured vehicle, with the bodies of three soldiers inside, was recovered from a swamp on Monday, March 31. The fourth soldier, who had also drowned in the swamp, was found on Tuesday, April 1.
