Amid preparations to launch new direct flights to the US, Germany, Spain, Israel, and other major hubs, the Lithuanian airport operator is to receive a capital injection.
The government decided on Wednesday to increase the capital of Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports, LTOU) by an additional 5 million euros, a second injection this year.
“Routes to the US, Madrid, Tel Aviv, Geneva, and other major aviation hubs are in the pipeline, and efforts will be made to establish even more convenient connections with our strategic partner Germany not only from Vilnius but also from other Lithuanian cities,” Transport Minister Marius Skuodis said in a press release.
According to the Transport Ministry, LTOU is already looking for a carrier to operate regular flights between Vilnius and Madrid, with further tenders planned in the coming years for flights between the Lithuanian capital and Tel Aviv, Geneva, Stuttgart, and Gothenburg, as well as between Kaunas and Warsaw, and between Palanga and Hamburg.
Last year, LTOU launched an initiative offering to share risks with private airlines serving connections from Lithuanian airports to important destinations, the ministry noted.
The initiative has so far helped land an agreement with LOT Polish Airlines to operate flights between Vilnius and London City Airport, while Latvia's Air Baltic will fly between the Lithuanian capital and Lisbon and Hamburg.
In August, LTOU also signed an agreement with Air Baltic for flights between Vilnius and Duesseldorf, Germany, starting on October 31.
