Lithuania has officially established diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Tonga, the Baltic country’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday,

The official exchange of communiqués on the establishment of diplomatic relations took place after a bilateral meeting between Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis and Foreign Minister Fekitamoeloa ʻUtoikamanu in New York.

“We are grateful to you for your strong position when voting in the United Nations for resolutions condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. We understand this is not an easy task in a world where pragmatic interests rather than value principles determine much,” Landsbergis said at the meeting.

The ministers also discussed possible cooperation on climate change and the development of renewable energy sources. The Tonga minister was invited to attend the Future of Democracy Forum in Vilnius in November.

The Kingdom of Tonga has hitherto been one of the six remaining UN member states with which Lithuania did not have diplomatic relations.

Lithuania has established diplomatic relations with 190 countries.
