Vilnius Public Transport (VVT) is auctioning 16 iconic Škoda 14Tr trolleybuses, some of which have been plying the city’s streets for more than 30 years.

“In the second half of August, 20 new trolleybuses will hit the streets of Vilnius, and we plan to renew our entire trolleybus fleet by 2026, so we are saying goodbye to vehicles that are no longer fit for service. Most of them have served passengers for more than 30 years and covered more than 1.2 million kilometres,” said Ignas Degutis, head of VVT.

The price of trolleybuses, built between 1984 and 2004, starts at 1,459 euros. It is stressed that those who win the auction and buy the trolleybuses will be obliged to use them responsibly.

“There are cases where purchased vehicles are abandoned – they or parts of them end up in forests, polluting the environment and creating an additional concern for the state, which must ensure their proper disposal,” noted Aurelijus Boldinovas, a technical director at VVT.

The successful bidders will have to transport the trolleybuses to the required location themselves, while the remaining unpurchased vehicles will be scrapped.

According to Degutis, experience in other cities and countries shows that old vehicles can be resurrected and used for a variety of purposes, such as cafés, food kiosks, art installations, and others.

Registration for the auction is open until August 6. The auction will take place from August 19 at 9:00 until August 20 at 13:59.
