‘I can tell Putin – nobody is afraid of you here,’ says Lithuanian president after attack on Volkov

Crimes such as the attack on Leonid Volkov in Lithuania are planned in advance, says President Gitanas Nausėda. He does not rule out the possibility of the Kremlin’s influence behind it.

“It is clear that such things are being planned, and we should not be surprised. But I want to make it very clear that the services will investigate and, I hope, find the guilty parties. And I can only say one thing to Putin – nobody is afraid of you here,” Nausėda told reporters in Paris on Wednesday.

Leonid Volkov, former chief of staff of Alexei Navalny, was attacked with a hammer outside his house in Vilnius on Tuesday evening. He is undergoing outpatient treatment after receiving medical assistance. A pre-trial investigation into minor bodily harm has been opened.

Speaking about the sanctions imposed by the Kremlin on Lithuanian politicians, the president said that if Russia is angered by Lithuania’s actions, it means they are effective.

“Our response is our unity and very clear decisions on Ukraine, which is the best ‘gift’ we can give to the Kremlin regime,” Nausėda said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday published a new list of 347 Baltic nationals banned from entering the Russian Federation for alleged “hostile actions”. Among them are Lithuanian Chief of Defence Valdemaras Rupšys, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, Justice Minister Ewelina Dobrowolska, Finance Minister Gintarė Skaistė, and others.
