Lithuania’s Independence Act signatory Genzelis dies aged 89

Bronislovas Genzelis, one of the members of the Supreme Council that declared Lithuania’s independence from the USSR on March 11, 1990, has passed away at the age of 89.

The death was confirmed to BNS by the Club of the Signatories of the Act of Independence on Monday.

Born on February 16, 1934, in Aukštadvaris, Trakai County, Genzelis was a well-known Lithuanian philosopher, politician and public figure.

In 1959, he graduated from Moscow University where he studied philosophy.

He was a member of the Communist Party between 1958 and 1990, and was also a member of the initiative group of the Lithuanian national revival movement Sąjūdis.

In 1990–1992, Genzelis served as a deputy of the Supreme Council-Reconstituent Seimas, and voted in favour of Lithuania’s Independence Act on March 11, 1990, alongside other signatories.

In 1992–1996 Genzelis was a member of the parliament, Seimas, and chaired the Committee on Education, Science and Culture.
