The NASAMS air defence system has been used for the first time during a field tactical exercise, the Lithuanian military said on Thursday.
On Thursday, the advanced system was used by the Air Defence Battalion of the Lithuanian Air Force. It is taking part in the international exercise Iron Wolf 2023-I with Lithuanian and allied military units, taking place for the second week.
The Air Defence Battalion is using Giraffe MkIV surveillance radars and RBS-70 short-range air defence systems during the exercise.
According to the Lithuanian military, NASAMS is considered to be one of the most effective medium-range air defence systems. Its main tasks are to support and protect districts, strategic sites and manoeuvre units from air attacks.
Purchased from Norway in 2020, the latest third-generation NASAMS air defence systems are designed to destroy various types of cruise missiles launched by hostile aircraft, as well as to destroy and remotely piloted aircraft.
