Lithuania to open embassy in Switzerland

Last week, Lithuania’s parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs backed the Foreign Ministry’s proposal to re-open the embassy in Switzerland.

“We supported the re-opening of the representation in Switzerland. We closed it some time ago, but since this country is one of the biggest donors to our reforms and also plays a significant role in the reconstruction of Ukraine and other issues, we realised that these political ties are significant,” Žygimantas Pavilionis, chairman of the parliamentary committee, told BNS.

To optimise its diplomatic representation, Lithuania closed its embassy in Bern, Switzerland, in 2018 and opened a consulate in Geneva.

Moreover, the Committee on Foreign Affairs decided to open a new consulate general in Munich to expand economic ties with Germany.

According to Pavilionis, Bavaria is Germany’s richest state, and about 90 countries have representations in Munich. New diplomatic representations are expected to open next year, he said.

Last week, Lithuania also opened an honorary consulate in Dubrovnik, its second in Croatia, the Foreign Ministry said.

“The activities of the honorary consulate will contribute to the development of trade, economic and cultural relations between Lithuania and Croatia, will have a positive impact on bilateral relations between Lithuania and Croatia, and will ensure support for Lithuanian citizens in the county,” the ministry told BNS.
