BNS 2022.02.24 11:57

The Lithuanian Education, Science and Sport Ministry is collecting information on available accommodation as part of preparations for a potential influx of refugees after Russia on Thursday launched a military operation in Ukraine.

“We have sent out inquiries to all educational institutions about available premises [...] suitable for accommodation, such as dormitories and empty buildings,” Education Minister Jurgita Šiugždinienė said in a press release.

All information on available premises is being forwarded to the Interior Ministry, according to Šiugždinienė.

“We will provide teaching for all Ukrainian children who end up in Lithuania because of the war,” she said. “We plan to increase support for Ukrainian students wishing to study in Lithuania.”

Deputy Interior Minister Vitalijus Dmitrijevas said on Tuesday that Lithuania was ready to accommodate 8,000 war refugees from Ukraine, but could expand the capacity to 50,000.

The plan is to distribute refugees proportionally among municipalities.
