Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda says he has signed the law on a one-off payout of 100 euros for seniors over 75 who get vaccinated against the coronavirus.
“I have signed the law on 100 euros, even though it has certain aspects that are questionable in terms of ethics and other things. I think today we should speak not about intimidating and this way pressuring people into vaccination, but we should also think about incentives,” the president said on Thursday ahead of the European Council meeting in Brussels.
The president also said that if the government had started offering incentives for getting vaccinated earlier, Lithuania would be in a better situation.
He also criticised the government for what he said was a “slowdown” in vaccination over the summer.
Almost 1.787 million people have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine in Lithuania so far, or 63.9 percent of the population.
