Despite court ruling, only a slim chance Clint Eastwood will get $6.1 from Lithuanian company – lawyers

On Sunday, Clint Eastwood was awarded 6.1 million US dollars in a case against a Lithuanian web development company Mediatonas that has illegally used the actor’s name to advertise CBD products. But chances that the famous American will receive the awarded sum are only theoretical, lawyers said.

For the actor to receive the money, Los Angeles Federal Court’s ruling must also be recognised in Lithuania, Laurynas Lukošiūnas, partner at the Sorainen law firm, said.

“This ruling is only binding in the United States. There is a procedure of recognition for it to become binding in Lithuania. The plaintiffs must apply to the Lithuanian Court of Appeal,” the lawyer said.

“Only when the court recognised the decision and allowed its execution, it would become possible to recover the money,” he added.

But Mediatonas is currently undergoing liquidation, which further complicates the situation.

“It is most likely that the whole story will end with the company’s insolvency,” Lukošiūnas said.

According to Ąžuolas Čekanavičius, a lawyer at Ellex Valiunas law firm, the company could use its property to cover the sum awarded by the court.

“If the company does not have enough assets, it is virtually impossible to recover money from the defendant,” he said.

In late 2020, Mediatonas had no long-term assets, according to data compiled by the Lithuanian State Enterprise Centre of Registers. The company’s short-term assets amounted to almost 826,000 euros.
