Lithuania to test all coronavirus patients for Delta strain

BNS 2021.06.25 13:31

All coronavirus patients in Lithuania will be tested for the Delta variant as part of efforts to control the spread of the dangerous strain first detected in India, the Health Ministry said on Friday.

Lithuania has been testing samples to detect mutations, but with a processing time of up to two weeks it had taken too long to trace the spread, the ministry said in a press release.

Now, the results of the additional testing come back within 24 hours, enabling the responsible authorities to act swiftly, it added.

The enhanced control measures include testing of low-risk contacts and mass testing in workplaces, schools or communities.

Six cases of the Delta variant have been officially confirmed in Lithuania so far, based on the latest statistics published by the National Public Health Surveillance Laboratory on Wednesday.
