Arvydas Sabonis will continue as the president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation for another year, the organisation's executive committee decided on Tuesday.
Sabonis' term was set to expire in September, but he will stay on until after the Olympic Games that were moved to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The pandemic has also disrupted the basketball season in Lithuania which was cut short in March.
“The situation is extraordinary and it wouldn't be nice if a new colleague came in during such a situation,” Sabonis was quoted in a statement from the Basketball Federation.
“I agreed to continue [as the president] and hope that the men's team will manage to get into the Olympics,” he added.
Sabonis has been leading the federation since October 2011. He replaced the body's long-standing president Vladas Garastas.
A retired professional basketball player, Sabonis won two Olympic bronze medals as part of Lithuania's national team and spent seven seasons in the NBA.
