Lithuania's Deputy Defence Minister Tomas Godliauskas is to leave his post by mutual agreement, he announced on Tuesday.

Godliauskas said he had initiated the resignation himself, with his final day in office set for Thursday. He said the decision had not been made suddenly and had been under consideration for several months.

"The minister approved this decision. It suits him and it suits me," Godliauskas said.

"I want to continue serving the state, but in a different role. These changes are taking place amicably and with a focus on ensuring continuity in our work."

He declined to disclose his next position but said details of his future role would be announced in due course.

Godliauskas was responsible for matters relating to total defence. He also served in the ministerial team of former Defence Minister Dovilė Šakalienė before joining the administration of the current minister, Robertas Kaunas.

Before entering government, Godliauskas spent more than two decades in the Lithuanian Armed Forces, serving in a range of operational and headquarters roles.

He holds a master's degree from the General Jonas Zemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania and has undertaken military studies in both the United States and Germany.
