A 17-year-old student has been detained after injuring three classmates in a stabbing at a school in Marijampolė, southwestern Lithuania, authorities said, as prosecutors launched a pretrial investigation. The suspect’s motives have not been disclosed.
The attack took place Tuesday morning at Sūduva Gymnasium before classes began. Two girls and one boy – students in the 9th and 12th grades – were injured.
Prosecutor Darius Jakutis of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office said initial information suggests the victims were not specifically targeted.
“Preliminary information indicates there were no personal motives,” Jakutis told a press conference.

Authorities said the suspect, who is a minor, used a multi-tool with a knife blade. The victims sustained stab and cut wounds to their backs and arms. According to preliminary data, the two girls suffered multiple stab wounds, while the boy appeared to have been injured once.
Medical officials said the injuries were not life-threatening. One girl sustained two shallow stab wounds to the back, while another suffered up to six wounds to the shoulder and back. The injured boy was treated for arm injuries and later released.
The suspect was wearing a black medical mask during the attack, prosecutors said.
The investigation has been classified as causing minor health impairment, though authorities said the classification could change as more details emerge.
Officials have not disclosed the suspect’s explanation for the attack, citing his age and health condition. A formal questioning will take place after consultations with medical professionals and child protection specialists.
“We cannot disclose details about the suspect’s personality at this stage,” Jakutis said, adding that all relevant circumstances, including possible links between the suspect’s condition and the attack, will be examined during the investigation.
School Director Audronė Vaičiulienė said the student had experienced psychological difficulties, and the school had been in contact with his mother.
