Lithuania’s Prosecutor General’s Office said on Friday it has asked Greece to extradite a detained suspect linked to planned political killings in Lithuania.
The suspect, described as a man of Greek origin from Georgia, was arrested on February 10 under a European Arrest Warrant. The international criminal case is said to be linked to a Russian spy network that had planned two killings in Lithuania.
A 55-year-old man was detained in Thessaloniki, Greece, for helping to transfer €5,000 as payment for planned murders in Lithuania.
Media reports say the intended targets may have been Ruslan Gabbasov, a Bashkir national movement leader living in Lithuania, and Valdas Bartkevičius, a civic activist who organises aid for Ukraine.
There are several suspects in the case with links to Greece.
Greek media report that the suspects gathered information on the two targets, but the police intervened in an operation last March and detained the suspects before the planned murders could take place.
