Vilnius City Council has decided to replace eight commemorative plaques installed during the Soviet era, which feature inscriptions in Russian, with new standard commemorative plaques approved by the council.

The commemorative plaques will be replaced for actor Mečys Chadaravičius, composer Konstantinas Galkauskas, writer Marcelinas Šikšnys, poet Petras Vaičiūnas, writer Antanas Žukauskas-Vienuolis, physicist Adolfas Jucius, mathematician Zigmas Žemaitis, and writer Antanas Jonynas.

According to Kamilė Šėraitė-Gogelienė, the chair of the municipal Historical Memory Commission, the municipality has been striving to replace as many bilingual plaques as possible with new ones since 2023.

“We are simply replacing bilingual plaques with plaques in Lithuanian. It’s a very simple procedure to completely remove the Russian language from our public spaces in Vilnius,” she told BNS.
