Lithuanians were treated to a rare sight on September 7: a total lunar eclipse, also known as a “Blood Moon”, when Earth’s shadow casts a reddish glow over its natural satellite. LRT.lt photographers captured the spectacle.

“Interestingly, about 60% of the world’s population could see this September 7 total eclipse from start to finish. The last total lunar eclipse visible in Lithuania was quite a while ago, on January 21, 2019,” Vilnius University astronomer Edita Stonkutė told LRT.lt.

During a total lunar eclipse, the moon passes entirely into Earth’s shadow, occurring when it is positioned directly opposite the sun, Stonkutė explained.
