Electric boats will soon begin operating on the Neris River in Vilnius. The city’s mayor, Valdas Benkunskas, shared a preview of what they will look like.
“We’re pulling back the curtain and revealing the first images of the electric boats that will operate on the Neris,” Benkunskas wrote on Facebook.
The boats are catamaran-type vessels, as their design makes them suitable for shallow waters.
Each boat will carry up to 32 passengers at a time and will be accessible for people with disabilities and cyclists.
The first route will link Žirmūnai and Žvėrynas, with the journey beginning at the Žirmūnai beach and finishing near the Verslo Trikampis business centre on Jasinskio Street. The trip is expected to take between 45 and 55 minutes.
Passengers will use 90-minute tickets for boat journeys, costing 3 euros. Tickets on board will cost 4 euros.
School pupils, university students, residents over the age of 80, and others qualifying under legal exemptions will receive an 80% discount – bringing the ticket price down to 0.60 cents.
A family ticket will also be available – 7 euros if purchased in advance, or 9 euros if purchased on board.
The tender for acquiring the electric boats, issued by the Vilnius Public Transport municipal company, was won by the Latvian ship manufacturer SIA, part of the BIC Group.
The total value for purchasing and servicing four electric boats is 1.85 million euros. Vilnius plans to acquire four more electric boats in the future.
