In a move to improve accessibility and expand its reach to a wider audience, LRT has introduced a significant update: from now on, viewers watching the live broadcast of LRT TV on the LRT.lt portal can choose not only Lithuanian but also automatically translated subtitles in English, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian.
Accessible around the clock, the new feature allows non-Lithuanian speakers interested in the national broadcaster’s output to access timely and reliable information, making LRT’s content easier to follow.
The service relies on advanced real-time machine translation technology to convert Lithuanian subtitles into the viewer’s chosen language. Subtitle preferences can be activated and changed directly within the live broadcast player. The development is particularly valuable for following news, current affairs and discussion programming, helping audiences from diverse backgrounds stay informed in a language they understand.
“LRT’s mission is to build a public media space that is open and accessible to all. That’s why we continuously invest in technological progress that broadens the reach of our content,” said Ričardas Baltaduonis, Head of LRT’s Internet Department.
“As with any automated system, subtitle inaccuracies may occur, so we kindly ask viewers to be understanding of potential errors. Introducing multilingual subtitles in live broadcasts is a natural next step in our strategy. We’re creating tools that widen access to trusted information and offer those who don’t speak Lithuanian a path to participate in Lithuania’s civic and cultural life, while also demonstrating openness and respect to the communities living here. This is our contribution to a more informed, inclusive and resilient society.”
This upgrade builds on an earlier feature in LRT’s media library, which offers automated Lithuanian subtitles for on-demand programmes. It forms part of LRT’s broader digital transformation strategy, which seeks to ensure national content remains accessible to audiences with a variety of needs and preferences.
LRT invites all users to explore the new feature on the LRT.lt portal and follow live LRT TV broadcasts with subtitles in their preferred language.
