Prosecutors in the northern Lithuanian city of Šiauliai have requested a 30-day arrest for a 53-year-old man accused of repeatedly desecrating the Israeli flag near a local Jewish community building.
The request was filed by a Šiauliai prosecutor following the conclusion of a pre-trial investigation into an incident on November last year when the 53-year-old desecrated the Israeli flag for the second time, the Lithuanian Prosecution Service said on Monday.
The man admitted full responsibility and expressed remorse for his actions, prosecutors said. On November 6, 2024, he is alleged to have intentionally removed an Israeli flag that was officially displayed in a public area near the building used by the local Jewish community. He then reportedly threw the flag on the ground, tore it, defaced it, and abandoned it in a nearby courtyard.
Authorities also confirmed that the same man had previously been fined under administrative law for a similar offence – throwing the same Israeli flag on the ground just a week earlier, on October 30.
