Lithuania’s state-owned rail passenger operator LTG Link and Poland’s PKP Intercity have agreed to improve rail service between the capitals of Vilnius and Warsaw, aiming to cut travel time by the end of this year and expand connections.
The two companies announced plans to shorten the journey between Vilnius and Warsaw by about one hour – to approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes – starting in December. In the longer term, the goal is to reduce travel time to under seven hours, LTG Link said in a statement Tuesday.
Currently, passengers travelling from Vilnius to Warsaw or Kraków must transfer at the border station of Mockava. Under the new agreement, the companies aim to introduce at least two direct connections daily between Vilnius and Warsaw, eventually expanding to four. The goal is to offer departures roughly every four hours throughout the day from each capital.
The companies are also coordinating two new international rail links to Vilnius: one from western Poland via Poznań and Warsaw, and another from Suwałki, a town near the Lithuanian border.
Timetables will be designed to allow convenient transfers in Warsaw, Kaunas and Vilnius to other domestic and international train routes operated by LTG Link and PKP Intercity.
In addition to the timetable upgrades, the companies plan to develop a joint passenger service model and begin acquiring new rolling stock specifically for these cross-border routes by the end of 2025.
