A street in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, near Kyiv, will be named after Tadas Tumas, a Lithuanian volunteer who fought for Ukraine and was killed in February 2024.
“The meeting of the Bucha Council has just ended, and its deputies unanimously voted to name a street in Bucha after the Lithuanian volunteer Tadas Tumas,” Taras Shaprasky, the council’s secretary, told LRT RADIO.
Shaprasky said a year had passed from the initial proposal to the final decision.
“A public opinion poll was held, and a special commission discussed the issue. I can say that throughout the entire process, there wasn’t a single vote against it; the proposal had unanimous support,” he said.
There are also plans to name a street in Vilnius after Tumas, but no decision has been made yet.
In March 2024, the Vilnius City Council passed a resolution to commemorate Tumas and Lithuanian filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius who was also killed in Ukraine.
Tumas, nicknamed Giant, was the first Lithuanian to lose his life in the war in Ukraine.
He was killed on February 23, 2024, when a Russian drone reportedly struck the car he and a Ukrainian soldier were using to transport mines to the frontlines near Bakhmut.
Tumas was buried in Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius last March.
