Vilnius is officially launching its European Green Capital 2025 events on Wednesday.

The Contemporary Art Centre is hosting a ceremony for the political commitment to the Green City Accord, with mayors and deputy mayors from cities such as Aarhus, Krakow, Treviso, Valletta, Varna, and others attending.

The Vilnius – European Green Capital 2025 official opening ceremony and forum will get underway later in the day.

Over the weekend, Vilnius will organise free activities focused on environmental protection.

According to the city’s municipality, the programme includes film screenings, creative workshops, guided tours, hikes, quiz competitions, orienteering races, and children’s performances.

“We want to involve as many Vilnius residents as possible in the green capital programme, which is why we are offering a broad range of activities throughout the city,” Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas said.

“This year, we will focus even more on sustainable mobility, the preservation of biodiversity, and climate change mitigation,” he added.

Vilnius is taking over as the European Green Capital from the Spanish city of Valencia.

The European Green Capital is awarded to cities with over 100,000 inhabitants in recognition of local efforts to improve the environment, as well as the economy and quality of life.

The award is given annually to a city that promotes eco-friendly urban solutions.

Mayor Benkunskas described the award as a significant achievement for the Lithuanian capital, offering an opportunity to take pride in what has been accomplished while also obliging the city to continue its sustainability efforts.
