Heads of Ukrainian and Lithuanian customs authorities signed a memorandum of understanding in Kyiv on preparations to implement the automated exchange of customs information, the Lithuanian Customs said on Friday.
According to Customs Director General Darius Žvironas, the memorandum is an unprecedented step when countries that do not share a common border agree to exchange information.
In addition, the customs chiefs discussed the possibility of extending the agreement signed in Vilnius in May on the application of uniform control measures in the implementation of sanctions against Russia and Belarus in order to involve other EU countries.
The agreement, which was signed in Vilnius by the heads of Customs of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Finland at the time, was later joined by Croatia.
Serhiy Zvyagintsev, head of Ukrainian customs, said that Ukrainian customs is uncovering schemes by companies that circumvent the sanctions and use third countries as proxies to hide the true origin of goods.
