Almost 8,000 foreigners, mostly from India, Belarus, and Pakistan, currently have temporary residence permits in Lithuania issued on the basis of studies.
Nearly 1,400 Indian citizens, 959 Belarusians, and 709 Pakistanis are currently studying in Lithuania, Jolita Gestautaitė of the Migration Department told the Seimas Committee on Education and Science on Wednesday.
So far this year, the largest number of temporary residence permits on the basis of studies – 668 – has been issued to Indian citizens, followed by Pakistani nationals (552), and students from Bangladesh (355).
This year, 108 temporary residence permits have been issued to Belarusians on the basis of studies in Lithuania.
Over 3,000 temporary residence permits have been issued in Lithuania on the basis of studies so far this year, compared to 4,400 last year.
Foreigners can come to Lithuania to study on a national visa or temporary residence permit.
National visas are issued to students studying in Lithuania on exchange programs for a period of up to one year.
Meanwhile, temporary residence permits are issued to third-country nationals who come to Lithuania to study on permanent study programs. For bachelor’s and master’s students, such permits are issued for two years, and doctoral students receive them for three years.
According to the Migration Department, foreign students are also allowed to bring their family members to Lithuania. This applies to foreign students enrolled in master’s or doctoral programs only.
