Virginijus Sinkevičius, who has been elected to the European Parliament in June, is stepping down as European commissioner, the European Commission said on Monday.

Transport Commissioner Adina Valean of Romania has also resigned from the Commission.

Sinkevičius will leave the EC on Tuesday. He was responsible for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has appointed Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič of Slovakia to cover Sinkevičius’ areas of responsibility.

Meanwhile, Valean’s portfolio will be covered by Dutch Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra.

At the end of June, Sinkevičius was elected vice-president of the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance.

Saulius Skvernelis, leader of the opposition Democratic Union “for Lithuania”, has said that Sinkevičius would give up his EP seat if offered a ministerial post in Lithuania following the general elections this October.
