Lithuania’s border guards came across a rare sight when their cameras picked up a bear walking along the border fence.
In the undated video published by the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) on Friday, the bear can be seen walking along the fence with Belarus, briefly attacking it, before jumping headfirst into the river and disappearing into the night.
“The bear tested the strength of a single metal pole equipped with a surveillance camera and a spotlight,” VSAT said in a press release. “The bear found the experiment to be enough and no longer tested the quality of other infrastructure.”
Bears are rarely spotted in the Baltic states. In Lithuania, they usually wade in from Belarus and Latvia, while the Baltic country that sees the most brown bears is Estonia, according to wildlife experts.
